Prom dress idea earns praise Fri, 18 Apr 2008 22:14:00 EST I nominate Blood-N-Fire Ministries, 300 N. Madison St., as a Star Performer for the great idea of reusing prom dresses. It's great that people donated their used dress. Many girls were wise consumers, and the proceeds go to a wonderful ministry to some of the neediest in our community. Keep up the good work.

Milk safety Fri, 18 Apr 2008 22:15:00 EST I read the article in The Star Press on April 14 about the grocery stores labeling milk from cows getting the rBST hormone and cows not getting the hormone. This rBST is a hormone causing cows to produce more milk, but it is not considered healthy for our children or us by some. It seems as though the grocery stores are more interested in safe milk for our people than the government. Unbelievable!

I'm backing Bates for Crown Point School Board Sat, 19 Apr 2008 02:15:49 CDT I am not seeking re-election in the May 6 Crown Point School Board election. Serving as a board member has been a rewarding experience that has allowed me to give back to the community, but I am stepping aside so new ideas and experience can come to the board.

Debate the issues Sat, 19 Apr 2008 01:08:00 EST "Elitist and out of touch"? Just another Clintonian "misstatement" to knee-cap Obama.
Show your displeasure Sat, 19 Apr 2008 01:08:00 EST I see that the federal prosecutors and U.S. District Court Judge Sarah Evans Barker have failed the people yet again. Honestly, Kenneth Allen is only getting four years for 37 arsons and more than $1 million in claims? This is a joke. Our criminal justice system is a joke.
Don't retire Sat, 19 Apr 2008 01:08:00 EST Dr. Phil retire? Oops, I mean Dr. Phil Ball. Who else would tell it like it is? I forbid your retirement!
Say it ain't so Sat, 19 Apr 2008 01:08:00 EST This is in response to Dr. Phil Ball's valedictory. We here at Truculent Manor, in the Rising Gorge section of Westbrook, can only repeat with that little Chicago boy of so very long ago, "Say it ain't so, Phil, say it ain't so."
EDITORIAL: Forcing students to volunteer could open their young minds Mon, 21 Apr 2008 00:01:21 CDT Highland School Board members are considering the implementation of an oxymoron -- forced volunteerism. Semantics aside, it's a good idea.
Transportation secretary letting unsafe trucks into U.S. Mon, 21 Apr 2008 00:01:21 CDT As a proud Teamster, I am urging coverage of Transportation Secretary Mary Peters allowing unsafe Mexican truck drivers to cross into our American highways. She has continuously defied both the House and the Senate with their decision to no longer fund the pilot program.

| Treasure each day, spend eternity with loved ones Mon, 21 Apr 2008 00:01:21 CDT The New York Giants were not the only ones to pull off an unbelievable feat on Super Bowl Sunday. | Consolidation won't streamline government Mon, 21 Apr 2008 00:01:21 CDT Suppose Indiana government convened a commission on improving the state's economic competitiveness. And suppose one of the recommendations was to consolidate all of the state's 659 machine shops into one big company. Each of the 659 company owners would rightly protest. |
| Exhibit explores Nazi persecution of gays Sun, 20 Apr 2008 01:54:16 CDT SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. | In Nazi Germany, some gay men were castrated and prosecuted under draconian laws prohibiting homosexuality. Others were subjected to crude medical experiments designed to "correct" their sexual orientation. Gay men in concentration camps were singled out with distinctive pink triangle badges and assigned backbreaking labor that often killed them. |

MARK BENNETT: Instead of Issues Fido was the Lou Gehrig of beagles. When it came to watchdog duties, Fido showed up every day. Loyal. Trustworthy. I knew him for 11 years. He had a spine of steel. (Sorry, Evan Bayh’s Hillary Clinton TV ad has crept into my vocabulary.) Anyway, Fido gave our family his best in his time on Earth.

EDITORIAL: Show Crown Point the money Tue, 22 Apr 2008 00:05:47 -0500 Crown Point officials are angry with Plasmatronics. They have every right to be.
South Shore extension must not be sneaked in Tue, 22 Apr 2008 00:05:47 -0500 Local legislators and pundits really crack me up. They are trying to use a statewide mass transit system to try and squeeze (sneak) in and justify the South Shore rail extension to nowhere. Give me a break.
Decide what's best for U.S. not yourself Tue, 22 Apr 2008 00:05:47 -0500 I don't know if I feel bitterness or sadness with the situation in this country. I would blame it on our current administration, but I realize some of the blame goes to American citizens. We've allowed our government to turn us into a "Hooray for me, the heck with you" society.

Shame on U.S. for not building border fence Tue, 22 Apr 2008 00:05:47 -0500 Bennie Thompson's job is chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. He recently stated something that makes me feel the U.S. government is going the wrong direction when it comes to scrutinizing the borders of our country. When Lou Dobbs asked Thompson why the wall was not being built, his answer was laughable. He said Congress gave him $3 billion to get this job finished. He stated we must go slow as not to infringe on personal property owners.
