| Family 'test-drives' a new dog on trail Fri, 01 Aug 2008 13:53:00 EST My family had a new experience on the Greenway this past weekend: walking an unfamiliar dog. Our previous, extensive dog-walking-on-the-Greenway experience had been with our beloved lab-mix Buddy, who made clear on walks the fact that we had flunked obedience school with every enthusiastic lunge to the side or tail-wagging trot ahead of the person tugging on the other end of the leash. But since Buddy died last fall, we've had none of that doggy delight to perk up our walks. So at a friend's recommendation, we decided this Saturday to give ARF's Pounds for Hounds program a try, borrowing a dog from the shelter for a stroll on the neighboring trail. We're not ready to adopt another dog right now, so this event was not to be the first step down that route, just a casual one-time date for a walk, no strings (other than the leash) attached. We arrived right around 9:30 a.m., having heard that the program is so popular the available dogs go quickly. Max, a newly arrived cocker spaniel, joined us, and we set out with him, heading north across Riggin Road and along the stretch of Greenway going past I&M. The walk went just fine, all told, but it wasn't really long enough to count as much exercise. For starters, Max — while perfectly sweet and friendly and doggish — was not as vigorous a walker as Buddy had been, so progress was somewhat slower than we were accustomed to. (His previous owner, we learned later, was older and couldn't walk him a lot, so he wasn't really used to it, or perhaps in the greatest shape for a 3-year-old pooch.) Also, it was getting pretty hot already, and apart from how we people felt, we were worried about Max, who had quite a lot of long, black fur (due to be cut the next week, the woman at ARF told us). We had water bottles along for everyone, including Max, and stopped regularly to offer him drinks. Several times the water break turned into Max just lying down on the side of the Greenway for a while — which Buddy would not have done under duress; too much to see and smell! — and we would all settle down, too, until he was ready to go. The only time he really seemed to get excited was when other dogs were nearby, a frequent occurrence with so many other ARF dogs out walking, too. Keeping Max and all three of us out of the way of passing bikes, runners and faster walkers on a very busy day on the Greenway was tricky, too, but ultimately we made it maybe half a mile out and then back to ARF. I presume Max enjoyed the stroll, and we'll likely try it again, if Max or some other ARF resident is game. We'll bring the water (and a plastic bag — just in case) if they're ready to put paws to pavement! |
| 'Accidental' rider becomes an expert Fri, 01 Aug 2008 10:53:00 EST I became a cyclist by accident. After not really having ridden much since my grade school days, my wife and I purchased bikes in 2000. We rode a little, but the next summer is when I hit my stride. With my wife pregnant with our first child and wanting to leave our only vehicle with her, I got out of the car and onto the seat for my evening commute. At that point, I began commuting on two wheels nine or 10 months out of the year. Then I started to ride for fun and fitness on the Cardinal Greenway. And then I gradually eased into long rides here and in Indianapolis and eventually participating in events such as the annual Greenway ride locally and even a day in the Hilly. I know how lucky I am to have access to the Greenway. A friend of mine from college, Josh Brewster, is one of the volunteers working tirelessly to get the B&O rail-to-trail project on the west side of Indy rolling. Currently, nothing is paved, and only a small portion of trail has been cleared. The B&O trail folks continue to raise money and awareness in an attempt to make their dream a reality. I even recall the rail-to-trail project in the Peoria, Ill., area where I grew up. I walked a couple of times on the trail as part of the annual Crop Walk, but none of the trail was paved (it was covered with wood chips) and there were areas that were washed out some after being pelted by spring rains. Plus, at the time, the trail wasn't very long and was in a remote area on the edge of the city, making it quite a drive to go for a walk or ride. Meanwhile, every once in a while I can ride the few blocks from my house to Westside Park, hop on the White River Greenway, connect to the Cardinal Greenway and make the 33-mile trip to Losantville and back on beautifully paved trail in some scenic, open Indiana farm country. At some point, possibly this fall, I hope to ride the trail to Losantville, then take other routes to the Cambridge City area, where my in-laws live. Beyond that, I look forward to the completion of the trail to Richmond and connection of Henry County trails to the Greenway, more distance and more challenges for this accidental cyclist. |
